Going Once, Going Twice……SOLD!

So have we said enough about our BIG EVENT this weekend??

NO!

There is a HUGE Masquerade Benefit Auction happening RIGHT NOW, on our Reptile Zoo Facebook Page. There are tons of donations from ExoTerra, ZooMed, Repashy, Prehistoric Pets, frequent customers, as well as our own Sam, Katy, Linda, and Mike.

This is our FIRST ANNUAL online auction to support Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary and The Reptile Zoo. Check Facebook each day this week for new auctions leading up to our special event at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, CA on October 30th!

The auction has begun, and will end at 9:00 PM PDT on October 30.

All posts should include only your bid in US dollars at least $5 above the previous bid. All negative, defamatory, & off topic comments will be immediately removed and blocked at the sole discretion of Prehistoric Inc. All bidders must be at least 18 years old. All bids are final and cannot be removed, edited, or replaced.

Bid does not include the shipping cost of $55. Animals can be shipped within the United States and to the next Hamm Germany show. If you are not within the US or able to pick-up the animal at Hamm email info@prehistoricinc.com for pricing and availability before bidding.

Please be aware of all local, state & federal requirements regarding ownership of the animal you are bidding on. Prehistoric Inc. is not liable or responsible for failure to meet these regulations.

Any bids after the action close will not be accepted unless an endurance challenge is activated.* The winner will be determined by the highest bid placed before the auction close. If more than 1 bid at the winning price was placed at the close of the auction the first bid wins.

*If 5 minutes before the auction close there is more than 1 bid per minute the auction will become an endurance challenge. The auction will no longer end at the noted time, but when no new bids are placed for 5 minutes. Bidders can only win an endurance challenge by outlasting the competition in a bidding war.

At the end of the auction a payment link will be added to www.prehistoricpets.com to complete the transaction. Users who fail to provide payment within 24 hours of the auction close will forfeit the offer and be blocked from future auctions.

All products/animals are sold as shown and cannot be transferred, traded, or returned.

Fiesty Little Buggers

Our newest addition to the vast array of exotic critters for sale is the Halloween Moon Crab!

These guys are known by other names, such as the Red Land Crab and the Whitespot Crab, but their Halloween alias is PERFECT for this time of year!!

They are found in mangroves, sand dunes, and rainforests along the Pacific Coast from Mexico down to Peru, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.  The body can reach a width of 5 centimeters, and they are super colorful...

These crabs commonly have an almost entirely black-purple carapace (body), a large pair of purplish claws, reddish-orange legs, orange-maroon spots behind the eyes, as well as whitish spots on their central-lower carapace.

Plus, they are pretty feisty for their size.  They won't hesitate to pinch, as most crabs do...but if you are looking for a fantastic addition to your aquarium, or just an interesting new pet...these guys are the way to go.  They are SO cool looking!!

Come check them out!    (2 in stock / $29.99)

Hot Turtle Eggs

It never ceases to amaze me how easily, quickly, and adequately animals can adapt to new surroundings.  I loved my ecology, vertebrate zoology, and ornithology classes in college.....SO interesting to learn about different species overcoming threats and environmental changes.  Animals are truly awesome.

ScienceDaily reports that researchers found turtles that actually evolved in their egg-laying to accommodate higher beach temperatures.

I thought that was what digging a deep hole was for....

Well, burying the eggs is mainly to keep them WARM, not to even out the temp....and also to protect them from predators.  A study was done on Ascension Island, off the coast of South America, for the Green Turtle.  Mothers would travel from the coast of S.A. to this tiny island to lay their eggs, mainly because it was where they themselves hatched (something I didn't know!).  There were two beaches in the study, and though they were only 6 kilometers apart, the temperatures varied around 3 degrees.

It doesn't seem like much, but after the eggs were put into warm incubators, it was found that the eggs from the warmer beach thrived much more than those from the cooler beach.  COOOOOOL.

These turtle mommas know what they are doing!

Check back for more news from the Reptile WORLD!

And of course, everyone's favorite...the Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula......

But wait....there's still more!

We not only have Emperor Scorpions, but their almost "twin" cousin, the Red Claw Scorpion....

(Check out the faint redness on the pincers....otherwise, I wouldn't know the difference!)

Oh, and did I almost forget to mention the ever-impressive Giant Red-Headed Centipede??

Who's in my house??

So with everything going on here...cementing, painting, wierd smells, loud noises...how are the animals taking it??

Well, they know something strange is happening, but they don't seem to mind.  Mainly they have this newfound curiosity and activity.

Here we see a male water monitor sizing up our renovation guy, Lance.  Its as if he's saying "What are you up to?  I run this place".

For the ones that don't watch our every move, they seem to "act" like they have no concern....sneaky.  Here, our Panther Chameleon "pretends" not to notice as Lance files down the cement right outside his cage.

And of course, there are the ones that just don't care....

So, in all, our tough critters are adapting quite well to the chaos.  Come keep them company, they LOVE the attention!

Why not do everything at once??

As our SPOOKY Masquerade party is getting closer...Jay is eager to get as much renovation done as possible!

We are still making progress on the alligator enclosure, cementing the finishing touches on the basin floor before we test water in it.  Its coming together quite smoothly and we are very excited to see the end result!

If any of you came in to Prehistoric Pets yesterday, you would have seen our newest renovation happening live!  We gave the old yucky floor behind our front counter a nice, attractive, THICK layer of cement as well.  Although our employees had to literally sit on the counter to fill orders while the floor dried, the result was worth it!

We are also continuing work on the new Caiman Lizard enclosure right inside the zoo.  It is looking fantastic!  Just look at how many people we need for this job...

Jay thinks these will be completed by our party date (Oct 30th)....what do you guys think??

With all the effort and hard work going into this...it can be done.  So make sure to attend our Spooky Costume Party at the Zoo (Sunday Oct 30th, 5-10pm) and see for yourselves!

October Treat!

So October is all about the scary, spooky, and creepy, right?  Well, we may be a tiny bit late, but for the rest of the month we have a creepy crawly addition to the hands-on area...a tarantula and scorpion!

Our Rose-hair Tarantulas are very docile, and beautiful to look at.  They get their name from the light pink hairs on their "head", or cephalothorax.  Originating in Chile, they are also known as the Chilean Rose.  They are always a big hit at parties, so why not bring them out for some special spooky handling??

The Emperor Scorpion is the largest type of scorpion in the world...however, they have the least amount of venom.  Ours DO still have their stingers, but their pincers are their main defense.  You can tell the level of danger by the size of both:  big stinger, small pincers = VERY venomous...and vice versa.  The Emperor has huge pincers, which they actually use more for sense than defense.  Their pincers are covered in tiny little hairs that they use almost like a cat's whiskers...to "feel" around their environment.  They are from Africa, love to eat crickets and super worms, and can glow TURQUOISE under a black light!!

So come by before the month is over for a very creepy type of petting zoo!!

Reptile Zoo PARTYYYYY!

Who doesn't LOVE October???

This year we are having a Family Friendly, Spooky Shindig here at the Zoo on Sunday, October 30th.  Why not on Halloween you may ask?  Well, you will all be busy trick-or-treating after school I'm sure...plus, Sunday is when most people are able to be out and about doing fun things, and we want EVERYONE to come!  Yayyyyyyy!

There are SO many things packed into this night you       won't        even       believe it!!  Here is the itinerary:

Ok, so the spooky, silly excitement will start at 5pm and last until 10pm, and admission is the same ($5 for everyone over 3 years old).  But remember your COSTUMES because when you first come in we will snap a picture of you, post it to our facebook pages, and let our fans vote for the best one!

1st place:   LIFETIME membership to the zoo

2nd place:   1 YEAR membership to the zoo

3rd place:   6 MONTH membership to the zoo

***Guidleines:  Please make sure the costume is "rated PG"...let's keep it family friendly***

Our alligator enclosure will be finished!!  We will have everything done by the end of this month, and will be adding water to test for leaks.  PLUS, you will have the opportunity to name our "new gator of unknown size and origin" (haha...we don't have it yet).  Pick a good name, drop it in the bowl (or hat...or bucket...or box...we don't know yet) and the winner will receive not only their name on the Gator's cage tag, but ALSO a 1-year membership to the zoo!

We will ALSO working on getting some sort of food truck to come out for the evening...possibly Dogzilla, Kogi, Burnt Truck or Lime Truck.

We will have games going on in the party rooms...most likely a coloring contest, scavenger hunt, an 18 and older WORM -eating contest, and bobbing for....something.  Speaking of games...there will also be a raffle for a chance to win:

A new pet plus a complete starter kit!

A video camera!

A LIFETIME membership to the zoo!

Furthermore...we will be having a live hatching snake eggs via YouTube for our fans who can't be here!

Our fearless leaders are trying to get Joel from Forever Wild to come back with some crazy critters of his own...and of course we will have our own "shop celebrities", such as Twinkie (world's largest snake) and Frank, the asian water monitor and Disney Channel star.

In addition...for the month of October, our hands-on area will include a tarantula and a scorpion!  Ahhhhhhh!

.....and OF COURSE....There will be lots and lots of CANDY!!!

Whew!!  thats's a LOT of awesomeness happening in one evening!  We hope you all can come out and join us...wear your best costume, bring your bravery, test your skills, and get ready for some crazy reptililian FUN!!!!!!

See you there!
