Cinco de Mayo Everyday at The Reptile Zoo!

¡Gracias a nuestros muchos seguidores en todo México! Ciudad de México y Guadalajara están en las 10 ciudades para los amantes de Prehistoric Pets! Estamos dedicando este blog para ti! Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Here at The Reptile Zoo we love our reptilian friends from Mexico and South America. Many parts of Mexico have a great climate for reptiles with almost 200 native varieties within the country including the common Iguana and Boa.

We are excited about the timely arrival of our newest addition to The Reptile Zoo a beautiful Gila Monster. We have been keeping a colony of Beaded Lizards at The Reptile Zoo for a little over a year now and we are excited to add their close relative and only other recognized venomous lizard to the ever updating exhibits.

Both the Gila Monster and Beaded lizard are part of the genus Heloderma which translates to studded skin from the Acient Greek. The unique skin, a key characterstic of these animals, is underlaid with beady scales made from  bony osteoderms.

The Heloderma genus includes only these two species with six sub-species all carrying the venemous charactersitics. Unlike snakes their venom glands are located in the lower jaw and can only render the venom by chewing on the predator. Studies conducted using this venom have been found to treat affects of diabetes, Alzheimers, HIV and possibly breast and lung cancer.

At The Reptile Zoo we are lucky enough to keep a colony of Beaded Lizards, which means when the breeding season comes we may have BABY Beaded Lizards! Beaded Lizards become mature around 7 years old and females normally lay their eggs between October and December. The size of these clutches can vary  from 2-8 eggs with the babies hatching in the summer of the following year.

Thanks for celebrating Cinco de Mayo with us! Hopefully you learned something while still enjoying yourself. If you're ever in the area be sure to stop by The Reptile Zoo to check out our collection of Mexico native reptiles and of course our Beaded Lizards and Gila Monsters!

LIVE From Fountain Valley, It's SATURDAY!

Talk about CrAzY Saturdays Fans!  I suppose you could say it’s a typical weekend for us, jamming with party families and future Herp owners.  It’s amazing to see the contrast between normal work days and the weekends; the shop goes from cricket quiet to screamin’ loud!  Not that we mind, it’s always so much fun to join in the festivities of all the happy families and also help amateurs become professional reptile handlers and owners.  Wonder what it must be like in the Reptile Zoo while we host our back to back Jurassic Parties?  One word…. HECTIC!  Here’s just a glimpse or two.

WOW that’s a LOT of people!  That definitely makes for a quick, easy and FUN work day for us.  Of course, when we aren’t caring for, cleaning after or checking on all our reptile friends, we are plotting.  Yes…. plotting.  Don’t you remember that tomorrow is the “oh so special” April Fools Day?!  Again, this holiday of pranks is upon us and I’m sure most of you are only counting the seconds until it’s over.  However, we gotta have a little fun here in the shop. ;)  Frank thought he’d get an extra early start and decided to sneak his way into Buddy’s cage while he was out doing a quick photo shoot with some party kids.  Hee Hee, As you can see, he was BUSTED before he could finish the prank!  Silly Frank, Tricks are for kids =P

As for the rest of the animals, they can’t focus too much on the prospect of perfect pranks when they need to have energy for their presentations.  Hey, who knows, maybe THEY are plotting this year’s perfect reptile prank…..o.O.  Hmmmmm, what do you think they will do?  WE MUST BE PREPARED!  With all the “ammo” we could use when working at a reptile shop for April Fool’s, I think maybe we should be more nervous around each other rather than worrying over our reptilious friends.  ;D

**BEWARE of what hides behind your decorations!** ;D

Michelle told Nick to eat on his lunch....this is what happens when you disobey O.O

It’s time to start counting down to one of the years funniest and most anxiety ridden holidays!  Have any cool reptile pranks??  Share them with us!  Have a great weekend guys and see you tomorrow!

Ciao!

'Tis the day before Christmas.....

And all through the store, people are buying pets and supplies, lizards and more! They're coming to learn, to buy and to see, why snakes make are much cooler than a dog name Fifi. Our T.V. star Frank, in the holiday mood, looks like he'd rather be searching for food.

Our little T-Rex gets in on the spirit, though most people don't really want to go near it.

All of us here at the Reptile Zoo, love the animals we own and the ones you do too! So come one and come all to this place we call home, to buy a new friend or simply to roam. Our staff can be funny, sometimes kinda weird, but hey that's what happens when our lizards have beards!

So Merry Christmas to all, have you scales or fur, remember that snakes make better gifts than boring old Myrrh.

Merry Christmas everybody!
