Guest Blogging from Across the Pond

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to give you all a heads up that I will be staying out at The Reptile Room for a week (be available there the 3rd-7th). For those who don't know, I am the sales manager from Prehistoric Pets in California- and we have loads of super high end animals in stock over there right now- some of which can ONLY be seen in person there, or at our shop in Cali.

I am really hoping that many of you will stop by- The Reptile Room has constructed a new VIP room for the high end animals, and it will be open to the public for the whole time I am there. I'm really hoping to have some great discussions regarding the most cutting edge genetics, ideas for new breeding projects, and whatever else you would like to pick my brain about.

It should be a great environment, a lot closer to many of you than any European shows, and I will be willing to sell anything you are interested in at show pricing. The most important thing to me is really just to make some good conversation with great people, and give you a more personal idea of who you would be dealing with if you ever were to get anything sent out there from us.

Many key breeders in the UK are working with genetics they have gotten from us on direct imports over the years, but never before has the opportunity been given for anyone at any level of the game to get directly involved with some of the front runners of the Retic game, as they now are able to through our partnership with The Reptile Room (I hope that doesn't sound too prideful- but I guess being an American I can't always help it, and you certainly expect it anyhow- haha).

I really hope to see you all there! -Garrett Hartle, Prehistoric Pets

Yay for Snake Day!

Attention all European herpers!!  April will be a very special month for you guys, especially the residents of Houten, because our very own Garrett Hartle will be attending the annual Snake Day on April 1st!  At this very special event, Garrett will have some of the best and most beautiful specialty Reticulated Python morphs you can find. Garrett will also be spending an additional week in the UK to help at The Reptile Room and meet even more UK clients!  We work exclusively with The Reptile Room as our official European Distributor; they go to all of the shows and even those we can’t make it to, like this weekend’s Hamm Germany show.  Make sure to stop by the booth and say hello to, shake a hand and even take pictures with our talented member of the Prehistoric Pets team.

Are you still sitting, staring at your computer screen with a confused look on your face?  Hmm, Well I guess I should explain what “Snake Day” is huh? LOL!  To put it blandly, “Snake Day” is a massive trade expo where herpers from all around the world unite in Houten, near Amsterdam, to buy and sell snakes.  The demand for special snakes has become so intense; Garrett’s order requests have shot up in a dramatic percentile.

Will YOU be at the annual Snake Day expo?  Take pictures with our Prehistoric Pets team during your visit at Snake Day and show your support by sharing them on our Facebook page!  We love to encourage fans from all over the world to share their photos and experiences with our team on our Fan sites.  You can follow us on:

The Force Is Strong With This One.

Ummm, this one who?  Tobias of course, the lucky winner of our Gator Naming Contest and free admission to the Reptile Zoo!  We introduced our 5ft male Alligator and created a contest to find the most worthy name.  For 4 months straight we collected massive quantities of name entries from kids and parents who came to visit the Zoo.  All in all we collected several hundreds of applications and had quite a tough decision ahead of us.  Alas, there could only be one.  However, the wait would prove worthy once we finalized the winning choice and announced a winner!  The force was strong with young Tobias as he was the lucky winner of our prestigious prize, naming our gator “Darth Gator”.

Tobias, whose name is proudly accompanying Darth Gator’s name tag, visited the Zoo with his whole family who enjoyed The Reptile Zoo for a couple hours taking pictures of their favorite exhibits.  Like most of us, Tobias was a bit uneasy about the gator when Garrett first took him out, but warmed up to it after his dad showed him how it was done. ;D

Darth Gator urges you to Join The Dark Side!  Mmuuaahhahahaha!

As expected, many Star Wars jokes flew back and forth in regards to the Gator and Tobias; can you blame us, it’s just too epic!  All together it was a fun visit for fans of The Reptile Zoo and winners out of over 400 submissions and online votes!  Congratulation to Tobias and his family, you will forever be a part of The Reptile Zoo history and known as the lucky boy who named our first male Alligator!

Follow Prehistoric Pets/ The Reptile Zoo on all our fan sites including Facebook, Twitter, The Reptile Zoo Blog and even Foursquare for more contests, news and updates!  Don’t forget to visit the Zoo and say Hello to Darth Gator and all his friends Frank, Twinkie, Thelma and Louise and Beelzebub.

Ciao!

UPDATE: Welcome Peanut!

Good day Herpers!

It’s time for another exclusive Reptile Zoo blog, this time we’re keeping it in-store with an update on one of the reptilian families in our zoo.  Our two Monkey Tail Skinks, Simia and Simian, gave birth to a beautiful baby skink named Peanut not too long ago.

Peanut <3

Peanut is very shy and is rarely seen outside of her hiding spot, luckily, Garrett spotted her ‘hanging out’ on her branch and I was able to snap some photos.  Luckily for Peanut, and unluckily for us, both male and female skinks are known to be territorial and often hostile towards members not a part of their family group, which can make for a difficult photo shoot. =P.

Although Peanut looks small now, she will be able to reach her adult size of 32 inches from nose to the tip of her tail.  As nocturnal animals, they rely heavily on their sense of smell, and use it to identify its territory and other members of its group.  As for that cute little prehensile monkey tail, it helps them maneuver from branch to branch with ease.  In addition to their tail, the legs and feet are well-adapted for climbing in the trees; the toes are long and armed with large, sharp claws that allow them to grip branches!  Pretty neat right?

Come by The Reptile Zoo and check out our Monkey Tail Skink family, hopefully Peanut will be in the mood for another photoshoot!  See you around the shop Herpers and happy hunting!

Jurassic Fact of the Week:   "The Party Newbie"

Hey herpers...this week I am featuring our new party presenter, Katy Bugler.  She's an awesome New Yorkan mix of rocker persona and reptilian intelligence. Always smilin' and always hard at work.  :-D

I met her pet Granite Burmese Python the other day...named Big Boy...and he is gorgeous!   She's a good snake momma.

Here's Katy with one of her favorite shop animals...a Green Iguana appropriately named "Trouble":

She has started the party training, with yours truly, and soon she will be making your birthdays memorable with the rest of us!!

Katy also helps out Garrett, our online sales manager, especially with keeping our website up-to-date.  She's always running around taking pictures of retics, or at the computer updating the info at www.prehistoricpets.com.  Check it out!

I snapped this pic of her with some of the cutest critters I have ever seen....Leachies!!

Besides the ever-growing variety of beautiful Reticulated Pythons, Katy's favorite reptile in our shop is the Monkey-tail Skink.  We have a pair, Simia & Simian, and Katy even named their baby (Peanut).  So come down to The Reptile Zoo and meet Katy, and Peanut too!

Where, oh where, has everyone gone??

Don't worry, we still have a steady stream of customers and guests...and animals...but where have our employees gone??

There is A LOT going on right now, and some of our key players are out on a mission!

For starters...Sam is running around like CRAZY trying to get a shipment of snakes ready for the airport.  They are headed to a very excited buyer.  :-D   There is a lot of paperwork though, and a lot of preparations...

Garrett, our go-to reptile retail guy, is on his way to the UK right NOW.  He's headed to Germany for the annual Snake Day Convention.  This is a big-time show, for ALL of Europe...thousands of people attend every year, even from all around the world!  Events like this allow us to get our name out there, and bring in LOTS of information about suppliers, other retailers, breeders, and potential buyers.

Also, our very own fearless leader, Jay...is trying to make his way to Chicago, for the NARBC in Tinley.  There has been a bit of trouble with the flights...but he's working on it.  The NARBC here in Anaheim was AWESOME this year, and there were SO many people....so again, a fantastic way to get our name out there even more!

So, those of us who are left here are holding down the fort, and keeping everything running very smoothly.  We are still working on our Alligator enclosure, and even a new Caiman Lizard enclosure.  They are going to be so awesome.  Keep checking back for more updates!

Its FINALLY happening!! The countdown is on!!

Ok, so maybe we are roughly 500 days behind schedule...but we are finally putting the finishing touches on our Alligator & Snapping Turtle enclosure! I told you guys a few weeks ago that we had acquired the glass, and it came in just a couple days ago. Well, last night, Jay and his crew actually started putting in the pieces and we got some awesome pics and video.

The glass is INSANE. Three pieces have been put in, and they are 3 1/4, laminated, 300 lb monsters! Not only are they heavy to lift, but they are tough to install. Here are some pics from the crew's "workout"....

Once the glue was applied, it was almost a race against time to lift, correctly place, and PUSH the pieces into place. Just check out this effort and teamwork...

....and they haven't even gotten to the BIGGEST piece yet...a 600lb WHOPPER!!

Take a look at the finished half of the enclosure....you can almost visualize how awesome its gonna be!

Great job everyone!! We are so excited for the finished product!!

But remember zoo-goers...no touching!

SO EXCITED!!!

How Many Enchis??

Let's throw another blog in today...you guys don't mind right? :-D

We have been featuring several YouTube videos about pulling clutches...how about one for opening a clutch?? In this video, Jay, Tim, and Garrett (well, mostly Garrett) cut a unique ball python clutch. A normal ball was bred to an "enchi" ball.

....a what???

The Enchi Ball Python is a genetic mutation discovered by Lars Brandell in 2002. They were named for the region of Africa in which they were discovered (Petros 2011). The Enchis have golden yellow sides and a greatly reduced pattern of dark pigmentation and faded saddles.

As you can tell from the video, it was very exciting for the guys to see mostly Enchis hatching out, because that means we can breed them later on for even cooler morphs! Check it out!

Also, check out www.prehistoricpets.com to see the cool morphs we have for sale!!

Featured YouTube Video!

This week, we are bringing you another new video...one of a gorgeous momma snake! She is a BIG beautiful Tiger Titanium retic that was bred to a Platinum het Titanium. Jay, Tim, and Mike discuss the physical attributes of the eggs, and how you can tell a "slug" (infertile egg) from a good egg.

Each clutch is its own genetics lesson...with complicated ratios and possible outcomes. This clutch was predicted to produce not only Tiger Titaniums and the coveted Platinum Titaniums ("Silver Surfers"), but also Tiger Titanium Platinums. Hmmmmmm....

Tiger Titanium Example:

After removing all of the eggs, Jay shows his technique for checking the snake for more eggs. This is his way of palpating (examining by touch) the mother to ensure nothing was missed and she can be fed.

So, these eggs have hatched now, and I heard that we received "some of the nicest" Silver Surfers that our guys have seen. If you are interested in seeing the "baby pictures" and possibly purchasing one of your own, just check out our website:

www.prehistoricpets.com (or the PP tab at the top)

and email garrett@jurassicparties.com for more information. They are awesome!!
