With all the plans for this year's event we couldn't help but get a bit nostaglic about our suprise hit in 2011. At the beginning of the day as we were finishing up the last minute details we had no idea what to expect or if anyone was even coming, but come they did and in droves!

To satisfy their taste buds GarlicScapes was on hand with plenty of good eats sure to keep the lurking vampires away. Let's just say fun was had by all.

30 Second Q & A

Here at the Reptile Zoo we are asked a lot of great questions about our animals so we thought we would answer 3 of the most common questions in under 30 seconds. Ready... set... go!

Many of you know Frank aka Kipling, our FAMOUS Asian Water Monitor. Just like people, Water Monitors like to go swimming. They are great swimmers, in fact, and love to splish-splash in their pool! Their lateral tails make it easier for them to glide through the water and practice some aerobics with their turtle friends. Here one of our big guys even looks a little like the Lockness Monster while he enjoys a quick dip.

When entering our store there is a friendly pond full of turtles. These cute, little guys love the attention from all of you – our valued friends and customers! All of these turtles have been rescued from the outside world and are brought here to a happy and comfy home where they are hand fed delicious worms. So come check out our turtle pond! As you can see, they love hanging around, and on, their friends!

Our baby African Spur Thigh tortoises are adorable as tiny, hungry hippos! Able to fit in the palm of your hand, they love munching on some nice, healthy lettuce. You can also come and see how big out little guys can get, by checking out our over 200lb full-grown adults lounging around our store! And they don't get that big by accident as you can see even this little guys has got food all over his face from his last chow down.

Thats it! How'd we do on timing? Check back soon for another 30 Second Q & A and all other things prehistoric at blog.thereptilezoo.com

Reptiles at Church?

Do reptiles at a church service seem like an oxymoron? Not at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California reptiles are just one of the many unique features at this community church. Prehistoric Pets and Jurassic Parties started partnering with Saddleback Church a couple years back and we have been priveleged to be included in many of their events since, including annual Blocktober and Vacation Bible School events.

Every time we are involved with Saddleback there are sure to be plenty of excited kids ready to learn about reptiles. This year's Easter services were no different with over 200 elementary school kids attending just one of the 7 kid-centric services.

Even though the groups are large we always get the crowd involved especially with the grand finale, one of our 12 foot Burmese Pythons or a large lizard like Rusty who just happens to be a full-time resident at Saddleback Church. Just when you thought it couldn't get any cooler right!

Rusty is an Asian Water Monitor just like Frank his brother (who plays Mr. Kipling on Disney Channel's JESSIE). Saddleback has built a great enclosure for him to hang out in with his own pool, basking areas, and custom cloud sky ceiling. This huge enclosure is part of "The Extreme" where middle school students come each week to enjoy the reptiles and service.

In addition to all of the kiddies who love visiting Rusty, he also gets a lot of attention from the reptile volunteers including founder Jay Brewer who visit each week and provide hands-on interaction with some of the smaller reptiles also housed at Saddleback.

Here at Prehistoric Pets and Jurassic Parties we love any opportunity to reach such a large and excited group of kids and are always excited when we get the call from Saddleback Church. If you are in the area it's worth a visit to see Rusty and his buddies at Saddleback!

Easter Games with Frank (aka Mr. Kipling)

Ever wonder if reptiles celebrate holidays? Well they sure do at The Reptile Zoo. Actually today is one of our favorite holidays! Everyone loves Easter for their own reasons, but Frank he loves Easter for the eggs! Who is Frank? He's one of the many starts at The Reptile Zoo! He even spends some of his time on the set of Disney Channel's JESSIE as Mr. Kipling!

Why does Frank love Easter eggs? The same reason you do... they're tasty! Frank loves to snack on eggs which are an extra special treat for him. Which is why he guards them so carefully! You wouldn't want to go Easter egg hunting with him, he doesn't share very well.

Here at The Reptile Zoo Frank only gets this special treat if "infertal" eggs have been found in a clutch. "Infertal" means these eggs are incapable of producing viable offspring. This is not very common in breeding at Prehistoric Pets, but does happen in a small percentage of the time. Instead of simply tossing these nutrient packed goodies Frank and his friends at The Reptile Zoo get an extra special treat. Waste not, want not!

Check out this video to see one of Frank's family members enjoying a quick snack of these infertal eggs.

It never fails after Frank has completed his meal he is looking for just one more snack!

From everyone at The Reptile Zoo we wish you the best Easter spent with family and friends. Everyone here is enjoying a day off and will back tomorrow to share even more reptile fun with you! Come visit us at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, California and meet Frank (aka Mr. Kipling) !

REPTILES Magazine at The Reptile Zoo

A couple months ago we got the call from REPTILES magazine offering us the opportunity to partner on a upcoming project, of course we responded with YES! REPTILES magazine and ReptileChannel.com are industry leaders as a high quality resource for all info reptile related. We were excited to learn Reptiles was looking to launch a video care series for first time reptile owners and wanted Jay, founder of Prehistoric Inc. to share his knowledge on the some of the most common starter pets. This seemed like the perfect fit; here at Prehistoric one of our main goals of our organization is to improve reptile awareness and proper care through responsible reptile ownership.

With some discussion on what animals to start the series Jay and REPTILES/ReptilesChannel.com editor Russ Case decided on the Bearded Dragon, Sulcatta Tortoise, Blue Tongue Skink, Frilled Dragon, as well as Jay’s specialties the Reticulated Python and Asian Water Monitor. The plan was to provide the basic details for each of these animals covering questions like: Where in the wild does the species originally come from? How big does it get? How long does it typically live in captivity? What kind of substrate is good to use? and What does it eat? Along with these facts we also used the opportunity of film to show samples of the animals in a yearling and adult size, as well as suggested products.

After all the planning we were finally ready to film. Last Monday editor Russ Case, web editor John Virata and the filming crew Shawn and Paul arrived at The Reptile Zoo ready to for a day filled with reptiles, cameras, and loads of great information on reptile care. Guests to The Reptile Zoo had the opportunity to act as the live audience watching the interaction and personalities of Jay and Russ develop through the informal interview format of the videos. Set behind Gator Island, the newest addition to The Reptile Zoo, the surroundings proved an easy distraction during filming with Prehistoric’s signature Sulfur Water Monitor breeding project in action and Frank the Asian Water Monitor currently featured on Disney Channel’s JESSIE walking in and out of the shots.

Just when the crew thought filming was done for the day, Reticulated Python breeding specialist, Tim O’Reilly invited the REPTILES team to watch the unveiling of the newest clutch of eggs. The offer was too good to refuse so the team moved the set into the incubator room where every snake produced by Prehistoric Pets is incubated and assisted in hatching and almost every one of these hatchings is filmed for viewers around the world to enjoy on our popular YouTube channel, PrehistoricPetsTV.

Video Link

At the end of the day Jay had to head out to start on his next project, but the REPTILES crew stuck around just a bit longer to capture some b-roll footage of the animals on a white backdrop to insert into the completed videos.

It was a great day at The Reptile Zoo with the REPTILES crew and we are anxious to see the final product which is set to launch on ReptileChannel.com and our YouTube channel in the coming months.
