Flashback/Flashforward The Reptile Zoo Masquerade

With all the plans for this year's event we couldn't help but get a bit nostaglic about our suprise hit in 2011. At the beginning of the day as we were finishing up the last minute details we had no idea what to expect or if anyone was even coming, but come they did and in droves!

With over 300 costume clad guests you couldn't help but get in a festive mood. The special guests like Frank aka Kipling from Disney Channel's JESSIE, the Forever Wild team with an adorable baby Tiger and brand new exhibits from The Reptile Zoo including the official unveilling of Gator Island and our California Native Rattlesnake collection!

If that wasn't enough to keep guests entertained we also had LIVE exotic animal demonstrations with veteran TV and Film trainer Jules Sylvester and The Reptile Zoo founder Jay Brewer where guests enjoyed learning about various venomous species and even got a chance to watch a clutch of pythons be born and filmed for the popular YouTube channel www.YouTube.com/PrehistoricPetsTV

To satisfy their taste buds GarlicScapes was on hand with plenty of good eats sure to keep the lurking vampires away. Let's just say fun was had by all.

But enough reminiscing, this year we are going to blow last year out of the water with all the great things we have planned for what we expect to be a MASSIVE crowd! First of all we've doubled our food truck capacity by bringing the ever popular Kogi BBQ and Chunk-n-Chip trucks to delight both your dinner and dessert needs.

Next we've added jungle themed BOUNCE HOUSES from Orange County Jumpers!

Oh did we forget to mention benefit recipient Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary will be bringing a BLACK LEOPARD and baby Bobcats!!!

Are you totally jealous now? Can't make it? Don't worry we haven't left you out of all the fun. This week on The Reptile Zoo facebook page we've got some great online auction items for you to take home. Just check out these beautiful animals below.

Easter Games with Frank (aka Mr. Kipling)

Ever wonder if reptiles celebrate holidays? Well they sure do at The Reptile Zoo. Actually today is one of our favorite holidays! Everyone loves Easter for their own reasons, but Frank he loves Easter for the eggs! Who is Frank? He's one of the many starts at The Reptile Zoo! He even spends some of his time on the set of Disney Channel's JESSIE as Mr. Kipling!

Why does Frank love Easter eggs? The same reason you do... they're tasty! Frank loves to snack on eggs which are an extra special treat for him. Which is why he guards them so carefully! You wouldn't want to go Easter egg hunting with him, he doesn't share very well.

Here at The Reptile Zoo Frank only gets this special treat if "infertal" eggs have been found in a clutch. "Infertal" means these eggs are incapable of producing viable offspring. This is not very common in breeding at Prehistoric Pets, but does happen in a small percentage of the time. Instead of simply tossing these nutrient packed goodies Frank and his friends at The Reptile Zoo get an extra special treat. Waste not, want not!

Check out this video to see one of Frank's family members enjoying a quick snack of these infertal eggs.

It never fails after Frank has completed his meal he is looking for just one more snack!

From everyone at The Reptile Zoo we wish you the best Easter spent with family and friends. Everyone here is enjoying a day off and will back tomorrow to share even more reptile fun with you! Come visit us at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, California and meet Frank (aka Mr. Kipling) !

Zoo News

October may be over, but the excitement is just beginning!

Our newely finished alligator exhibit is up and running, with our 5-foot gator as well as an Alligator Snapping Turtle enjoying the abundant water.  We are still working on getting an even larger gator (fingers crossed) to inhabit the super cool enclosure, but until then, take part in our contest to name the one we have!  Come in to the zoo anytime and find the "naming table" by the photobooth/animal handling area.  There are bright green slips of paper, enter your alligator name idea, YOUR name, address, and email for a chance to win a 1-year pass to the Zoo!  Drop them in the blue bucket and at the end of December we will sort through them all, put the best ones on our Facebook page and let our fans decide!!  (So check back for that portion of the contest and get your friends to vote!)

Make sure to not only check out the gator and snapping turtles...but also the Softshell Turtles, Red-eared Sliders, and the Pacu (a South American freshwater fish related to the Piranha).  They used to be in the pond up front, but in this exhibit you really see how HUGE they are!

The Caiman Lizard enclosure turned out so awesome!  If you haven't seen the finished product come check it out!  They are so happy swimming around with the turtles and fish.  This particular enclosure again provides a GREAT view of one of the sneakier fish in the front pond...the Red-tail Catfish! (come and see if you can find him!)

Our new wing next door is being worked on everyday...I hear talk of a new presentation area, new zoo exhibits, and even a new incubation room with a window for guests!  How cool does that sound?!?!?!  I can't wait to see what happens....

Our Water Monitor Breeding Group is honeymooning in the gator exhibit for right now, and it seems to be working its magic...we will most likely have a few clutches on the way VERY soon!!

ALSO, this is a big month for us because of Black Friday!!  Yayyyyyy!  There are going to be some SWEET deals happening, and I will keep you informed...possibly another party as well??  We'll see.....

As for the Zoo itself, we are still the same AWESOME place to come hang out, look around, bring the kids, and PARTY!  Plus, we are getting new additions to the zoo or retail area almost every week, so there is always something new to see!

See you soon herpers!!

Anthony and his "dog" Bane

Many herpers come in to buy new pets from us, but we especially LOVE when they come back to show us how well they are doing!

Anthony Nguyen, bought a gorgeous black throat monitor from us about 3 months ago, and it is already twice the size it was!  He named him Bane, and he loves to take him for walks on a harness...drawing much attention I'm sure.  Bane gets a healthy diet of chicken and rats...which you can tell from his nice round belly.  Here are a couple pics from their visit today.  Thanks Anthony, and we are so glad that Bane found such a loving home!!

Congrats Mike!

Monitor-ing the Inventory

Meet our new stock boy!  His name is Chris, today is his first day on the job!  When I got to work this morning this is what I found!!!  One of our smaller monitors seemed to be gaurding and protecting and taking inventory of all the new merchandise we are getting in to help you better take care of your pets!  Chris is one of our smaller Asian Water Monitors and he has a little bit of an attitude problem, actually Jay and I had to chase him down through the parking lot the other night and fish him out from underneath a parked car together.  So, who better to put in charge of inventory control?  As you can see from the pictures below, he was circling the product keeping everyone away and then checking each individual package to ensure that everything on the invoice had arrived in proper condition!  We are hoping that giving Chris more responsibility and putting him in charge of something will be all the positive reinforcement he needs to help him become a better monitor!!!!  The bruise on my leg from the whipping he gave me this morning is proof positive it's working!  hahahahah!

Much love!

On Patrol!

Checking the invoice!

Everything looks good Boss!

Back off man and stay away from my stuff!
