Bullfrog Comparisons

At first glance it may seem like the only difference between an American Bullfrog and an African Bullfrog is their country of origin, but when you look close that all changes.

The American Bullfrog is characterized by its spotted green and brown coloration, large eardrums, long "fingers" and usually erect posture. These frogs are very common and can be found throughout the United States and Canada and when undisturbed in ponds love to make a large croaking noise to attract a female companion.

The American Bullfrog can grow on average to be about 7 to 10 inches in length. Studies show the bullfrog preys on any animal it can overpower and stuff down its throat. This characteristic is common to the American and African Bullfrog who are both agressive eaters digesting prey including rodents, small turtles, snakes, frogs (including bullfrogs), birds, and bats, as well as the many invertebrates, such as insects, which are the usual diet of frogs.

As you can see although both animals may love to eat the African Bullfrog, also commonly called Pixie Frog, looks more like the American Bullfrog's fat cousin. By weight the American Bullfrog usually grows to about 1 lb while the African Bullfrog can weigh a whopping 4+ lbs! The coloration of these animals are also quite different. Pixie Frogs love to live in the marshes where they burrow down covering their bright yellow belly while American Bullfrogs enjoy hop near the rivers edge.

Next time you are in The Reptile Zoo be sure to visit both our American and African Bullfrogs to see if you can tell the difference yourself!

Pixie Power!

“Croak … croooak ….      CROAK!”

Did anybody else hear that?  I could have sworn I heard the croaking of a Bullfrog.  Hmmm…

“Croak.  Croak.  Croooak.”

There it is again!  I must solve the mystery of the croaking in the shadows. O.o …  FOUND IT!  Guess what it is?  That’s right; it’s our Prehistoric Pet of the week!  We FINALLY have in stock some baby African Bullfrogs, or “Pixies” for short.  Calling all amphibian lovers, get em’ while their young! Lol.  These cute little frogs are available for you to take home today and don’t worry, we have ALL the goodies you need to set up a palace for your Pixie and make sure you know the proper ways to care for your new pet!  Now, before you scroll about 2 inches more and see the “Awwwwe So CUUUTE!” photos of our available Pixies, let us inform you, much like our children, these frogs won’t stay that small and cute.  =P  Did your eyebrow just raise?  Ok… Let me explain.

African Bullfrogs, Pixie Frogs, is one of the largest frogs in South Africa measuring at an average of almost 10 inches! So don't underestimate them when you see the cute little babies for sale.  Pixies prefer to live in open grasslands and can be found in puddles. When the dry season arrives, the Pixie burrows underground using his strong hind legs and sort of hibernates while he lives off the fat he stored from previous meals.   What’s on the Pixie Meal menu you might ask?  This giant frog eats anything it can fit into its mouth such as insects of various kinds, fish, mice, reptiles and sometimes other frogs! Bleh, YUCKY!   The frogs can even survive for several months in dry soil by absorbing water stored in the bladder.

Usually, the hippity hop of our froggy friends would be something to “Awwee” at but in this case, not so much.  The Pixie frog has been known to jump at things it knows as a threat and the male bullfrog will also aggressively defend his eggs if an animal or a human should approach.  Think you can handle a Pixie bite? Just a little ol’ frog you say?  Well, Pixies actually has quite sharp teeth and can lay down a pretty serious bite.  However, despite their “aggressive” nature when threatened or in the wild, Pixies make fun and unique additions to any amphibian’s paradise!  Squishy and soft, these Pixie frogs won’t be here long, so make sure you stop by prehistoric Pets and take home your frogger today!

Ciao!

Jurassic Fact of the Week!

This week we are spotlighting an awesome party animal.

It's the African Bullfrog! (AKA "Pixie Frog"...named for the genus Pyxicephalus) His name is Prince Charming, and he is huge! African Bullfrogs are awesome...but very lazy. They will sit in the water, or dirt, or both...cover themselves all the way up to their eyes...and just wait for food to come to them. Something cool that most people don't know is that these guys don't eat bugs...they will eat RATS! In the wild they will eat anything that they think can fit in their mouth. So, besides eating and being lazy, Prince Charming is just plain cool-looking. Check him out!!

Now come have a party with him! :-)

Wanna Party like the dinosaurs did?

I love it when I come in in the morning and a Jurassic Party is about to start!  There is so much excitement!!!!!  It makes the day so happy!  Kids wide eyed with anticipation, standing at the front door (we are open daily from 11-8 except Sundays) about to pop waiting for the presentation to begin!  I'm not quite sure if reptiles get excited, but they certainly seem to move around alot more while waiting for them to start!  If you haven't been to The Reptil Zoo in a while, you should definately come by, we have made more changes to this place than you could ever imagine, and if you are lucky enought o come by while a party is in progress, you will get to see first hand how it all goes down!  The presenter this morning is Nolan (see his bio http://blog.thereptilezoo.com/post/Meet-Nolan!.aspx)  and I am a=watching him run around like a mad man right now getting everything ready so that the party goes off with out a hitch!  They always do though!  We train our presenters from the first day they get here so that every Jurassic Party is better than the next!  They parties really are the most fun thing we do here, and everybody has a birthday right?  if not, you couldnt possibly even be reading this blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  So, if you have a birthday on the way, or even if you don't and you just want to get your friends together for an amazing presentation that is educational and super fun!

Hope to see you and hear from you soon!
