Flashback/Flashforward The Reptile Zoo Masquerade

With all the plans for this year's event we couldn't help but get a bit nostaglic about our suprise hit in 2011. At the beginning of the day as we were finishing up the last minute details we had no idea what to expect or if anyone was even coming, but come they did and in droves!

With over 300 costume clad guests you couldn't help but get in a festive mood. The special guests like Frank aka Kipling from Disney Channel's JESSIE, the Forever Wild team with an adorable baby Tiger and brand new exhibits from The Reptile Zoo including the official unveilling of Gator Island and our California Native Rattlesnake collection!

If that wasn't enough to keep guests entertained we also had LIVE exotic animal demonstrations with veteran TV and Film trainer Jules Sylvester and The Reptile Zoo founder Jay Brewer where guests enjoyed learning about various venomous species and even got a chance to watch a clutch of pythons be born and filmed for the popular YouTube channel www.YouTube.com/PrehistoricPetsTV

To satisfy their taste buds GarlicScapes was on hand with plenty of good eats sure to keep the lurking vampires away. Let's just say fun was had by all.

But enough reminiscing, this year we are going to blow last year out of the water with all the great things we have planned for what we expect to be a MASSIVE crowd! First of all we've doubled our food truck capacity by bringing the ever popular Kogi BBQ and Chunk-n-Chip trucks to delight both your dinner and dessert needs.

Next we've added jungle themed BOUNCE HOUSES from Orange County Jumpers!

Oh did we forget to mention benefit recipient Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary will be bringing a BLACK LEOPARD and baby Bobcats!!!

Are you totally jealous now? Can't make it? Don't worry we haven't left you out of all the fun. This week on The Reptile Zoo facebook page we've got some great online auction items for you to take home. Just check out these beautiful animals below.

Reptiles at Church?

Do reptiles at a church service seem like an oxymoron? Not at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California reptiles are just one of the many unique features at this community church. Prehistoric Pets and Jurassic Parties started partnering with Saddleback Church a couple years back and we have been priveleged to be included in many of their events since, including annual Blocktober and Vacation Bible School events.

Every time we are involved with Saddleback there are sure to be plenty of excited kids ready to learn about reptiles. This year's Easter services were no different with over 200 elementary school kids attending just one of the 7 kid-centric services.

Even though the groups are large we always get the crowd involved especially with the grand finale, one of our 12 foot Burmese Pythons or a large lizard like Rusty who just happens to be a full-time resident at Saddleback Church. Just when you thought it couldn't get any cooler right!

Rusty is an Asian Water Monitor just like Frank his brother (who plays Mr. Kipling on Disney Channel's JESSIE). Saddleback has built a great enclosure for him to hang out in with his own pool, basking areas, and custom cloud sky ceiling. This huge enclosure is part of "The Extreme" where middle school students come each week to enjoy the reptiles and service.

In addition to all of the kiddies who love visiting Rusty, he also gets a lot of attention from the reptile volunteers including founder Jay Brewer who visit each week and provide hands-on interaction with some of the smaller reptiles also housed at Saddleback.

Here at Prehistoric Pets and Jurassic Parties we love any opportunity to reach such a large and excited group of kids and are always excited when we get the call from Saddleback Church. If you are in the area it's worth a visit to see Rusty and his buddies at Saddleback!

Meet Davey: The newest scaly member of Jurassic Parties

Meet Davey aka Davey Jones, a yearling American Alligator, the newest resident at The Reptile Zoo and soon to be the most exciting scaly member of Jurassic Parties. That's right, starting next week Davey will be available as an addition to your Jurassic Party event! These events are specifically tailored to provide even more educational tidbits than our standard birthday and can be customized to meet the California State Science Content Standards for your age group.

With the addition of Davey we will also be covering the topic of restricted pet ownership in California and why it is important for the safety of the environment and owners to follow these rules. Below is an excerpt from the California Code of Regulations, Title 14 which lists these animals.

§671. Importation, Transportation and Possession of Live Restricted Animals.

(a) It shall be unlawful to import, transport, or possess live animals restricted in subsection (c) below except under permit issued by the department...

(b) The commission has determined the below listed animals are not normally domesticated in this state. Mammals listed to prevent the depletion of wild populations and to provide for animal welfare are termed "welfare animals", and are designated by the letter "W". Those species listed because they pose a threat to native wildlife, the agriculture interests of the state or to public health or safety are termed "detrimental animals" and are designated by the letter "D"...

(7) Class Reptilia -Reptiles

(A) Order Crocodilia -Crocodiles, Caimans, Alligators and Gavials: All species (D).

Some of the other highlights from this list are all primates, marsupials, hedgehogs, ferrets, wolves, snapping turtles, vipers, and cobras. You might notice you can find some of these animals like American Alligators and Snapping Turtles at The Reptile Zoo. Wonder why? Through our partnership with Brockett's Film and Fauna, who are permitted to own these animals, The Reptile Zoo and Jurassic Partiesare can display these animals for educational use. We have been preparing for this partnership for a couple years, actually it's one of the main reasons we opened The Reptile Zoo in the first place. The creation of The Reptile Zoo as a donation driven educational zoo separates these permitted species from the retail pet store environment of Prehistoric Pets.

But enough about boring laws. Want to hear more about Davey? .... I knew you would. Davey as we mentioned before is an American Alligator with the potential to grow up to six hundred pounds! But for now, he is a slender 2 year old who enjoys swimming with his goldfish friends/food in his specially designed home at The Reptile Zoo. Since arriving at the zoo last week he has been training for his big Jurassic Parties debut, with daily handling sessions both with his handler and trainer. Although most gators at his size can be quite fiesty and flighty Davey is calm, cool, and collected. Have you fallen in love yet? If so be sure to stop by The Reptile Zoo to meet our little buddy or better yet book your Educational Event with Jurassic Parties and he will come to you!
