October Celebrations with Prehistoric Adventures

Fall is here and so are some of the best Pumpkin Patches around, packed to the brim with fun activities for all! A place for families, friends, or even a date night, this atmosphere is the bee's knees.

For the first time ever we are bringing our mobile Reptile Zoo to the pumpkin patch to add to the spooky fun. You can find us and all of our reptile friends in both Fountain Valley and La Habra at Santa's Garden pumpkin patch.

These pumpkin patches advertises huge, inflatable slides, bounce houses, fire engine train rides and more! You can slide down the Tiger's Mouth or swoosh down the Ship under an Octopus Attack.

But this year's fashion is to have a live, 10 foot snake wrapped around your body, offering a big smile with you in a forever-memorable picture!

As you can see, we have a pen set up for our African spurred tortoises, which you can feed for just three tickets! You can also see we have a full sized iguana, two monitor lizards, and a pancake tortoise.

We also have a rock python, yellow footed tortoises, reticulated pythons and a two hundred and fifty pound reticulated python.

We have lots of other animals set up with an adorable pumpkin theme.

Come see reptiles from around the globe, hold pythons, skinks, and even a scorpion (if you're feeling adventurous).  So come stop by our scenic and fantastic pumpkin patch and start your October with smiles, laughs, and memories.

Ordering One Molt To-Go

Imagine opening a cage and finding this beauty looking at you! At first I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at. I knew what I was supposed to be looking at... an Emperor Scorpion, one of the largest species from Africa, but was the scorpion eating a frog? Was it eating another scorpion? Was it breeding? No it couldn't be.

All of these thoughts seemed plausible until I considered the most obvious answer... the scorpion was molting! What's molting? Molting is basically the arachnid version of shedding. Each time a scorpion gets larger it grows out of it's skin and produces a new larger version underneath.

It then slowly walks, crawls, wiggles and inches it's way out of the outer skin. This process can take from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the humidity and animal. HINT: If you have your own creepy crawly scorpion at home you can help this process by adding a little moisture to the surrounding bedding to help increase this humidity.

As it is coming out the scorpion will usually be discolored, sometimes even white. This is because the outer skeleton has not hardened, immedietly after molting the new skin is soft and susceptible to damage. HINT: If your scorpion is molting be sure not to handle or feed it during this time as it can cause injury.

Once fully hardened, taking up to a day, the new exo-skeleton will become shiny and regain it's normal coloration. Once you see this change the molting process is complete and it will look like your scorpion has cloned itself! Don't worry the scorpion is not radioactive (we'll talk more about that later) or part of some crazy science experiment.

The scorpion has just left behind it's molt which looks like a transparent clone of itself. The scorpion no longer needs this molt, it does not eat it, so it can now become your trophy or better yet great gag gift to suprise your friends with!

HINT: Both the old molt and new skin glow bright turquoise under a black light which is sure to raise the spooky factor for your arachiphobia friends!

As you can see the Emperor Scorpion can be a pretty exciting pet... just check out Priscilla's blog about everything you need called  I AM EMPEROR , but if you're not up to that you can enjoy an up-close and personal look at the scorpion along with some of his reptile friends at your next Jurassic Party!

LIVE From Fountain Valley, It's SATURDAY!

Talk about CrAzY Saturdays Fans!  I suppose you could say it’s a typical weekend for us, jamming with party families and future Herp owners.  It’s amazing to see the contrast between normal work days and the weekends; the shop goes from cricket quiet to screamin’ loud!  Not that we mind, it’s always so much fun to join in the festivities of all the happy families and also help amateurs become professional reptile handlers and owners.  Wonder what it must be like in the Reptile Zoo while we host our back to back Jurassic Parties?  One word…. HECTIC!  Here’s just a glimpse or two.

WOW that’s a LOT of people!  That definitely makes for a quick, easy and FUN work day for us.  Of course, when we aren’t caring for, cleaning after or checking on all our reptile friends, we are plotting.  Yes…. plotting.  Don’t you remember that tomorrow is the “oh so special” April Fools Day?!  Again, this holiday of pranks is upon us and I’m sure most of you are only counting the seconds until it’s over.  However, we gotta have a little fun here in the shop. ;)  Frank thought he’d get an extra early start and decided to sneak his way into Buddy’s cage while he was out doing a quick photo shoot with some party kids.  Hee Hee, As you can see, he was BUSTED before he could finish the prank!  Silly Frank, Tricks are for kids =P

As for the rest of the animals, they can’t focus too much on the prospect of perfect pranks when they need to have energy for their presentations.  Hey, who knows, maybe THEY are plotting this year’s perfect reptile prank…..o.O.  Hmmmmm, what do you think they will do?  WE MUST BE PREPARED!  With all the “ammo” we could use when working at a reptile shop for April Fool’s, I think maybe we should be more nervous around each other rather than worrying over our reptilious friends.  ;D

**BEWARE of what hides behind your decorations!** ;D

Michelle told Nick to eat on his lunch....this is what happens when you disobey O.O

It’s time to start counting down to one of the years funniest and most anxiety ridden holidays!  Have any cool reptile pranks??  Share them with us!  Have a great weekend guys and see you tomorrow!

Ciao!

Na-na-na-na-na-na....Batman!

Creature Feature!

The Jurassic Fact of the Week is highlighting our Emperor Scorpions. A very common party animal, these tough little guys are the largest of all scorpions in the world. However, they are the least venomous as well.

Mandy and I dub ours "Batman" and assure the kids that if he did sting, it would be as harmless as a bee sting. The Emperors are naturally docile and actually use their pincers more often than their stinger. However, even THEN they mostly use their pincers to "feel" around their environment with the many tiny hairs that cover them. So, its definitely a great creature for groups of kids...very hardy, and tame. Also, it creates QUITE a stir, especially among moms, when it first comes out!

Emperor Scorpions originate in Africa, and can get about 8 inches long! They eat crickets or super worms mostly...they grab them with their pincers and chew. As tiny tiny babies, they are a strange, almost transparent white and ride on their mom's back all day...what a life. Want to know something really awesome?? Under a blacklight, these critters GLOW turquoise!

Wicked!! Come see some for yourself...hold one...even take one home for $19.99!!
