Jet Lag Recovery at Prehistoric Pets

Well, everybody, I’m back at Prehistoric Pets and all settled in, so I figured it was high time to write up a little blog about my trip to Holland for the exotic animal show, and stay over in Cleveleys, England for a while afterwards.  I had a great time, and met a lot of really great people (and a few… interesting ones as well)!

I flew in to Amsterdam, where I was met by Dean Turner from The Reptile Room- a great exotic animal shop with high quality stock that acts as our official UK and European brokers. These guys are pros, and make it easy for me- they picked me up at the airport with all of our display materials and animals (in custom made climate controlled traveling cages) and took us out to the hotel we stayed at outside of the Houten convention center.

We got the animals settled into the room, and headed out for a night on the town in Amsterdam.  Being careful not to turn the wrong corner (haha), we had pizza and watched the Blackpool football (soccer to us Yanks) game at an Irish pub, of all places.  One of the guys from the Reptile Room, Louis Charlesworth, got pretty rowdy with his team winning the match- so we had to watch his back a little, but all had a good time.

The next day- we got the traveling displays all set up, and spent the day either delivering preordered animals, or helping people select exactly the right snake for their  situation- no matter what the budget, breeding plans, or personal preferences are, we had the snakes on hand with a great selection.  We go to many of the shows in Houten, and also in Hamm Germany- and this is a great way for overseas customers to meet up with the breeder directly, ask their questions, and make sure to get the right snake- often at great deals too!

The day was long, and by the end of it, my voice was gone (I have been known to talk!).  It was time to head back to England for the boys, and normally, this would be the point where they drop me back off at the airport in Amsterdam and I fly home as well, but not this time! I rode the ferry with them back to England, where I spent the week working with our animals over there (and helping them out with a few of theirs as well).

They put me to work during the slow times, but thanks to a great job of advertising my presence there, there wasn’t much down time anyway- we had people traveling across the country, and even visiting from Ireland and Scotland- to come see the awesome display snakes we had brought and finally talk face to face about some of the exciting things going on in the blossoming  UK Reticulated Python market.

Lots of longtime customers stopped by, and even more new customers who had been thinking about their first retic came down and finally made the plunge!  I met a lot of leaders in the reptile industry while I was there as well, from a variety of different fields, and met my first European Adder too!

I want to say thank you to everyone who traveled so far to come out and say hi to me while I was there, and of course, a big thanks to all of our customers- past and present!  I hope it’s not too long before I get to visit again- the taste of the Blood Pudding and Haggis (not as bad as it sounds, by the way- I quite enjoyed it) is calling me!

It's that time of year again Prehistoric Pets is coming to the UK to support our official European Distributors The Reptile Room! Our sales mangager Garrett will be travelling across the pond to attend Snake Day at Houten Expo in Amsterdam and then spending a WEEK at The Reptile Room so he will have the opportunity to meet customers in the shop.

Before Garrett is off for his extended stay at The Reptile Room he'll be visiting reptile fans this Sunday, April 1st at Expo Houten in Amsterdam, just a short drive from the Amsterdam International Airport (AMS). Snake Day at Houten is a laid back family freindly show with hundreds of great animal vendors, last time Jay even got a photo with a huge owl and a couple fluffy bunnies. This show is only one day so be sure to stop by so you don't miss out on the fun.

After the close of  Snake Day at Expo Houten the team will begin their travel back to the UK where The Reptile Room has been diligentlly preparing with some great new additions to the shop including the VIP Room! Sounds pretty nice right? Well it is. This area houses only the top snakes available in Europe in caging designed through a partnership by Prehistoric Pets founder Jay Brewer and The Reptile Room team. The VIP Room is pretty exclusive, but if you stop by The Reptile Room while Garrett's in town he and Dean will be your VIP tour guides in this exclusive area. The best days to come visit are April 3-7th, but you may want to call ahead at The Reptile Room to make sure of the exact times each day. You can contact The Reptile Room by calling 01253 863 700 or emailing info@thereptileroom.co.uk

If you live in back here in the US we will still be recieving emails and taking orders but you may experience some delay. Thank you so much for your patience, hopefully we'll get some updates from Garrett while he's gone to share with everyone here!

Today is our final prep day before Jay and Garrett head out to the Tinley Park NARBC: North American Reptile Breeders Conference this weekend! We will have 2 tables full of great python morphs to look at, and if the price is right to take home! Wonder what we're bringing? Here are just a couple glimpses into what you can expect this weekend.

The list is full of pythons including burms and rock pythons which are part of the "python ban" that goes into effect March 23. That means if you don't live in California this will be one of your last chances to pick up one of the 4 species from Prehistoric Pets. And of course there are plenty of industry leading retics on the list as well!

The Friday Summit is a place to not only hear from some of the industries top professionals but also BOTH of our voices in Washington PIJAC & USARK. Prior to the panel discussion we will hear from USARK and PIJAC about the most current legislation facing us, and what they are doing to fight it. Come prepared for the panel discussion loaded with questions, as the night is an open forum of Questions and Answers. When you leave Friday night you should know EXACTLY what you can do to better help in the fight against this onslaught of legislation our hobby and industry face. We hope to see everyone come out and participate in what we feel is THE MOST IMPORTANT HERP MEETING EVER. New legal issues will always be on the horizon so we will all need to be united in one voice or our hobby/industry are doomed........come out and HELP UNIFY THE INDUSTRY!

The Talented Mr. Kipling

Again??? Yes...again....we are just so proud of our little Frank and what an awesome job he's doing on his new TV show.

For those who don't know...real quick, our very own Frank, the Asian Water Monitor, was chosen to be a key part in the new Disney Channel show, Jessie. He plays the outrageous Mr. Kipling, and if you haven't seen it yet....well, its absolutely hilarious. Especially for those who know how monitors REALLY act. :-P So, I found a video of the second episode, and you MUST check it out....its so funny.

Its also very exciting. Its so cool to see him on TV after working around him for so long. He's like our shop pet. Frank is SO friendly, and the Disney cast loves him as well!   We saw his official "script", which was so cute...they have SFX of hissing for him, and he "flirts" with a toy dinosaur!

So, check out the video, AND the TV show, AAANNND come in to visit Frank here at Prehistoric Pets!!!

So...what's new in the Zoo? A LOT!!

We try to keep you guys updated pretty well on what happens day-to-day here at Prehistoric Pets...so let's take a second to recap.

I just updated everyone on how well the alligator enclosure is coming along...we are just about a month away from completion!! Everyone here is SO excited because this is our biggest and most detailed yet....even bigger than Twinkie's! We had some of the guys clean it up a bit today, to get ready for painting and final preparations. Here are some "so far" pics for you:

GREAT work everyone!!

We also just got a new shipment of everyone's favorite gecko...the crested! We have some WAYYYY cool ones too, come check them out!!

There are the Red Harlequins (sweet) that range from $149.99 to $249.99

Even some Gargoyle Geckos (super cool) for $89.99

"Checkin' out my reflection..."

"Where's Waldo?"

Plus there is also a beautiful assortment of normal Cresteds with awesome coloring.

Perhaps the most excitement, however, is about a very special Asian Water Monitor named Frank. He has been a workaholic lately...Jay has been taking him to and from L.A. every week to film a new Disney Channel TV series!!!

"Jessie" will premier tonight on the Disney Channel at 9pm...so be sure to check it out to see Frank as the lovable little trouble-maker, Mr. Kipling. We are SO excited!

With all this craziness going on, we are still the same old awesome place to come have a party, feed turtles & tortoises, touch and hold snakes, and just check out some very RARE reptiles...so be sure to stop by!

See you soon!

NARBC Anaheim 2011!!

Greetings Reptilian fans of the WORLD!!

We hope most of you were able to stop by the North American Reptile Breeders Conference (NARBC) in Anaheim this past weekend…if not, here is what you missed!

First off, Prehistoric Pets, and the Swamp Brothers (from the Discovery Channel) stopped by KTLA's Good Day LA last Friday morning for an interview about the NARBC, and brought some critters along for the trip. Here is a peek:

Swamp Brothers And Creatures on GDLA: MyFoxLA.com

The NARBC does reptile trade shows all over the U.S. and Prehistoric Pets attends the Anaheim Conference every year. This is our chance to showcase our animals, especially our VERY extensive and amazing collection of Reticulated Pythons. This year, we had our biggest display ever! We brought around 180 snakes, (90% of those being retics) and a few extra critters...so about 200 animals altogether! Of those 160-or-so retics, almost all of them were different morphs! It was quite a sight to see for any reptile-lover and newbie-herper alike.

We had an awesome set-up that allowed guests to get up-close and personal with the snake displays to see just how interesting the patterns and colors are. Atmosphere was present, with our large T-rex and other huge critters from the shop including 2 huge tortoises and Frank, our Disney Channel STAR monitor! People from all over the WORLD gathered to showcase, trade, sell, buy, and discuss everything reptile! It was great to see and converse with others in the reptile community, and several even visited the shop afterward!

There was also an auction, with proceeds going to USARK. The Swamp Brothers (Stephen & Robbie Keszey), as well as Ton Jones from Auction Hunters (A&E) made guest appearances and gave signed t-shirts (right off their backs!) to be auctioned off...which our very own Prehistoric Pets owner, Jay Brewer, purchased. Here's a pic of the somewhat "embarrassing" transfer! (lol)

Prehistoric Pets actually partnered the booth with another AWESOME foundation, Reptile Rescue Orange County (with our own Sam Makki). RROC is a non-profit public organization, taking in and caring for herps of all types, creating adoption opportunities, and educating the public on care and proper maintenance.

The video in this blog is the first of two...the other video of the show will be posted soon! It will include in-depth info and access of our displays and animals.

Thank you to all who helped put this show together, all the hard work...and thank you to all who stopped by to check us out! Come see us at Prehistoric Pets, and watch for the second video on Facebook!
