Now A Word From Your Sponsors...

Prehistoric Pets has worked closely with schools, churches and programs of all sorts to bring fun and first time experiences to the lives of children in our community.  From hosting parties for schools and scouts, to sponsoring teams and kids in special programs, we have had years of experience with giving back to our young ones!  Just recently, Prehistoric Pets/ The Reptile Zoo/ Jurassic Parties decided to sponsor the Boys Varsity soccer team from Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale, CA and had them visit the shop and Zoo after their last CIF playoff game this week.

The Environmental Charter School (ECS) is a school unlike our traditional public schools; in fact, it’s a free public charter school that operates independent of a traditional school district.  “The mission of Environmental Charter High School is to inspire students to discover their own sense of purpose, to equip all students with the knowledge and skills to graduate from college and to empower them to become quality stewards of their community and world.” quotes the home site for ECS.  On top of their challenging programs, students are required to use concepts and skills learned in class to problem-solve local civic and environmental matters, and take action to make an impact.   ECS extends learning beyond the classroom walls as they complete community service, participate in service learning projects, join outdoor education field trips, and are encouraged to take internships.  This is just a few of the things that make ECS so wonderful and unique, visit their website for more information!

The boys came in and visited us for the first time just this past weekend; they got to meet Frank, Twinkie, Willy and many more as they cruised thru the Zoo corridors and stopped by the photo booth to hold some cool reptiles!  They were accompanied by their coach and our fellow staffer, Daniel Pask who has been coaching the almost 20 member team for the entire season.  Some of the boys were psyched to check out the animals in the zoo while a few were ducking under their friends for cover from the “scurry snakey-do”! hee hee =P.  Thanks to our sponsorship, the team was able to afford NEW home and away jerseys! Congrats guys!   Visit our homepage for info on how YOU can become part of the Prehistoric Pets team!

Congratulations on making it to CIF playoff’s boys and thank you for visiting our store!  We look forward to more involvement in future programs and events for our community.

Ciao!

INSANITY!!!!

It’s an insane day here at The Reptile Zoo, with over 200 guests already accounted for by 12pm, and that’s JUST the IN STORE parties!  From 10am, an hour before actual opening, to 6pm was stacked with party animals and reptiles too! ;P  With so many people to attend to already, not to mention the customers here for animals purchases, feed, and the zoo; EVERYONE is running around crazy!

Just L@@k at the flood of people attending JUST Nick’s party for Nyaa’s birthday!!

Between parties, the guests in our zoo as well as lingering party people were able to witness one of the FIRST LIVE monitor feeding in their new humble abode!  All that breeding they’ve been doing all week and all DAY sure have worked up a “Monitorus” appetite =P.  An even COOLER happening in the zoo today was a rare sighting indeed.  One of our monitors stayed suburged under water for over 20 minutes!  Just taking a little stroll I suppose, but pretty awesome to witness nonetheless!  VERY RARE sighting!  L@@K!

Later after Nick’s party, I had a blast with Mallory and her friends and family.  Everyone was more than willing to pet and even HOLD majority of all our friendly critters, especially the ARACHNIDS!  Loud and proud the party attendees were chucking out question after question; yelp of excitement and giggles of joy!  I was more than pumped to accommodate their needs and show them a REAL One of a kind experience!

It’s a bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Superman! Nope….it’s BETTER!  It’s everyone’s favorite, blast from the past, Mike McConnell!  Infamous for his courageous and daring antics during his presentations, he has a natural knack for nabbing everyone’s full attention and interest (No it’s not just because he has half a finger ;P).   Across the shop you could hear the excited “Ooh’s” and “aww’s” creeping out of the presentation room, with an occasional “AAAAHHHH!”.

Right when the parties end and we think the madness is over, we look up a BEHOLD!  Waves of Reptile Zoo guests rushing in to check out the zoo and visit Twinkie and Frank!  Today surley was a day to PARTYYY!!  Book your party today and experience the FUN you've been hearing about!  It'S OuT oF CoNtRoL!!! <3

Herper Question of the Week

Today is allllll about the small, but MIGHTY, Super Dwarf Reticulated Python!

We get MANY questions...but mostly about their size. Interest is raised because they are basically a mini-me Retic!

First imported in 1999, these little guys are naturally greenish-gray, with orange or copper colored eyes. They are becoming increasingly popular as pets because of their manageable size, but still abundantly different beautiful patterns.

Super Dwarf Retics can reach a length of 8 feet. At this length they are usually a weight of about 20 lbs, because they don't get very thick. There is also a "step" in between Super Dwarf Retic and Normal Retic, that is just known as a Dwarf Retic. They grow to around 12-14 feet.

Our breeding team here at Prehistoric Pets is always working to create different morphs, and to supply the growing demand for these beautiful creatures. They are definitely a GREAT choice if you are looking for something exotic that won't grow HUGE.

Just as an interesting factoid...the longest reticulated python ever found was in 1912 on an Indonesian island....33 feet long and 270 lbs! Check this out!!

ReptileDiscovery.com reports that the largest known in the U.S. is a Retic named "Fluffy"....24 feet, 310 lbs, and 13 years old. Hmmmmmm....

Well, that means YOU folks really know the largest! Our Twinkie is not only a beautiful AMEL retic, but she's 22 feet, 350 lbs...and only 8 years old! She's STILL growing, people!

Just beautiful...and she's SO strong...ALL muscle!

Ok, so this was a little bit about big retics...but mainly about the mighty Super Dwarf! Check out www.prehistoricpets.com to see our selection and find out more about your future pet!

Frilled and Friendly!!

Hey there Herpers!<br>

There are so many fun and interesting creatures lurking around every nook and cranny here at the shop, sometimes its hard to keep up.  Everyday we have kids and parents asking to hold and pet the array of beautiful animals we breed and supply, but most are housed behind glass walls and stone enclosures.  So how do you get a REAL Jurassic experience?!  BOOKING A JURASSIC PARTY OF COURSE!!!

Its as Simple as 1, 2, 3 CLICK and BOOM!  Book a party TODAY with us and have a ONE OF A KIND party for your special event!  Give your kids the party to be talked about for years to come!  Along with snakes, geckos, bearded dragons and MUCH more that are brought to parties, one guest especially stands out.  Our much loved Fred, the Frill-Necked Lizard!!

FRED RULES ALL!!!!

Frill Necked Lizards or "Frilled Dragons" are found mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea. Its name comes from the large frill or fan around its neck, which usually stays folded against the lizard's body.  BUT when  the lizard is frightened, it gapes its mouth exposing a bright lining and the frill flares out displaying bright orange and red scales. This reaction is often used toward off other predators  or during mating.  You probobly know these little guys from the feature film "Jurassic Park" as the black slime spitting "dinosaurs", however, Frilleds do NOT spit black slime! This is what it looks like to watch them do their 'Thang' ;P.

FRILLIN!!

The frill-necked lizard is an arboreal lizard, meaning it spends a majority of its time in the trees.  These lizards venture to the floor only in search of food, or to battle over territory!  The trees provide adequate camoflauge as well as offer most of the small insects frilled dragons eat.  Not to mention the fact that they like to be at the tipy top of just about . . .

Anything...

Or Anyone!

Friendly and loveable, Fred is one of the select few IN STORE ONLY party only animals provided.  Yup, that means you gotta come visit him at The Reptile Zoo, or book a party IN the Zoo to NOT ONLY to get hands on experience with one of the coolest lizards under the sun, but also check out featured animals like TWINKIE The worlds Largest snake, or Frank our asian water monitor who now stars in the Disney T.V. show "Jessie"!

Question of the Week...

Well, more like question of the YEAR.

QUESTION: "What do you feed that huge snake??"

I can honestly say that EVERYDAY we are asked what we feed to Twinkie. We get several questions about her, but that is the most popular. I can see why, because she is so big, most of us just can't comprehend her eating anything other than a small child. But don't worry...that is definitely not on the menu.

Twinkie is our claim to fame...she's an 8-year-old, 23-foot, 370 lb, Amelanistic Reticulated Python. She is the largest documented snake in the world, due to her size. She is not the longest...but the largest. Very muscular and powerful, Twinkie is a beautiful sight to behold...causing MANY MANY gasps each and everyday.

ANSWER: Each week, we offer her a JUMBO rabbit, usually at least 15 lbs itself. Sometimes she won't take it, but usually she's a great eater. Obviously.

She's also famous...having been on Leno and Conan. She even has her own facebook page. Check it out: "Twinkie: The World's Largest Snake". People have come from all over the world to witness her girth, as well as the MANY other rarities in our zoo. While not particularly aggressive, it does take at least 6 grown men to handle her because she is SO powerful.

We love you Twinkie!
