Prehistoric Times in 2013

How could it already be a month into 2014?!? The year of the snake just slithered by so fast we barely had a chance to share some of the great experiences that came with it, but we're going to try to make it up to you with an extra long recap blog chocked full of photos & videos. So many we'll be highlighting details from some of our favorite stories over the next couple weeks as well.

Miracle Babies

Here at The Reptile Zoo we see every reptile birth as a special miracle, but last week there was no doubt how special our newest addition was!

We were more than surprised to find a TWO-HEADED Reticulated Python with huge potential. As you can see in the photo these little guys are conjoined right at the neck with two completely separate heads and a shared body, very similar to our longtime two-headed mascots Thelma & Louise, but unlike Thelma & Louise who are Texas Ratsnakes these retic newbies have the potential to grow over 200lbs! Just imagine that!

Snakes, just like humans can have twins which share one egg when developing, but in some cases the two can grow together to create conjoined twins. Just like with humans depending on the area and severity of the connection the two can live a long unhindered life. For example Thelma & Louise have been at The Reptile Zoo for over 10 years, which is long for any ratsnake let alone two-headed!

Now that these two have been out and about getting used to their new environment we are anxiously waiting their next steps into maturity and stability which include their first shed and first meal. These markers will help us guage their health and status, but after already trying to nibble on our fingers we don't think limited appetite will be their problem!

Be sure to keep an eye on the blog to keep up with their progress and even be part of naming these amazingly unique animals. We'll also be updating Facebook with quick glimpses at the newbies!

Westward Expansion!

Howdy!   We are movin out WEST ya'll!!

No, not into the ocean....or to China....but west of our building.  We just bought the space next door!

Many of you got the special experience of enjoying a FREE presentation in this very room during our Spooky Masquerade last month.  It was packed full and some very exotic creatures were shown...some that don't even go out to regular parties like alligators, gila monsters, & rattlesnakes!

So we are steadily making changes to that wing, and hopefully when we finish there will be a new area of the zoo!  Also, we are hoping to have a brand-new breeding area.  Its still up-in-the-air, but we are thinking a window too, for public view of clutches being pulled!!

What do YOU think we should add???  (tell us on Facebook!)

If you have been in and checked everything out, you are probably familiar with the three large cages in the pet shop area.  There are usually different things in them from time to time, but right now we have a Rhino Iguana, and a few retics.  They will soon find new homes and we will tear those cages out (maybe by Christmas!) to make room for even more retail!  Just another way we are moving towards being your go-to shop for everything reptile!!

See?  we hardly have enough room up front for our GROWING retail supply!  But don't worry, these animals will get NEW cages, maybe in our new wing!!  So excited....aren't you?

Keep checking back for more info...there's always something new happening here at Prehistoric Pets!

Zoo News

October may be over, but the excitement is just beginning!

Our newely finished alligator exhibit is up and running, with our 5-foot gator as well as an Alligator Snapping Turtle enjoying the abundant water.  We are still working on getting an even larger gator (fingers crossed) to inhabit the super cool enclosure, but until then, take part in our contest to name the one we have!  Come in to the zoo anytime and find the "naming table" by the photobooth/animal handling area.  There are bright green slips of paper, enter your alligator name idea, YOUR name, address, and email for a chance to win a 1-year pass to the Zoo!  Drop them in the blue bucket and at the end of December we will sort through them all, put the best ones on our Facebook page and let our fans decide!!  (So check back for that portion of the contest and get your friends to vote!)

Make sure to not only check out the gator and snapping turtles...but also the Softshell Turtles, Red-eared Sliders, and the Pacu (a South American freshwater fish related to the Piranha).  They used to be in the pond up front, but in this exhibit you really see how HUGE they are!

The Caiman Lizard enclosure turned out so awesome!  If you haven't seen the finished product come check it out!  They are so happy swimming around with the turtles and fish.  This particular enclosure again provides a GREAT view of one of the sneakier fish in the front pond...the Red-tail Catfish! (come and see if you can find him!)

Our new wing next door is being worked on everyday...I hear talk of a new presentation area, new zoo exhibits, and even a new incubation room with a window for guests!  How cool does that sound?!?!?!  I can't wait to see what happens....

Our Water Monitor Breeding Group is honeymooning in the gator exhibit for right now, and it seems to be working its magic...we will most likely have a few clutches on the way VERY soon!!

ALSO, this is a big month for us because of Black Friday!!  Yayyyyyy!  There are going to be some SWEET deals happening, and I will keep you informed...possibly another party as well??  We'll see.....

As for the Zoo itself, we are still the same AWESOME place to come hang out, look around, bring the kids, and PARTY!  Plus, we are getting new additions to the zoo or retail area almost every week, so there is always something new to see!

See you soon herpers!!

Where, oh where, has everyone gone??

Don't worry, we still have a steady stream of customers and guests...and animals...but where have our employees gone??

There is A LOT going on right now, and some of our key players are out on a mission!

For starters...Sam is running around like CRAZY trying to get a shipment of snakes ready for the airport.  They are headed to a very excited buyer.  :-D   There is a lot of paperwork though, and a lot of preparations...

Garrett, our go-to reptile retail guy, is on his way to the UK right NOW.  He's headed to Germany for the annual Snake Day Convention.  This is a big-time show, for ALL of Europe...thousands of people attend every year, even from all around the world!  Events like this allow us to get our name out there, and bring in LOTS of information about suppliers, other retailers, breeders, and potential buyers.

Also, our very own fearless leader, Jay...is trying to make his way to Chicago, for the NARBC in Tinley.  There has been a bit of trouble with the flights...but he's working on it.  The NARBC here in Anaheim was AWESOME this year, and there were SO many people....so again, a fantastic way to get our name out there even more!

So, those of us who are left here are holding down the fort, and keeping everything running very smoothly.  We are still working on our Alligator enclosure, and even a new Caiman Lizard enclosure.  They are going to be so awesome.  Keep checking back for more updates!

So...what's new in the Zoo? A LOT!!

We try to keep you guys updated pretty well on what happens day-to-day here at Prehistoric Pets...so let's take a second to recap.

I just updated everyone on how well the alligator enclosure is coming along...we are just about a month away from completion!! Everyone here is SO excited because this is our biggest and most detailed yet....even bigger than Twinkie's! We had some of the guys clean it up a bit today, to get ready for painting and final preparations. Here are some "so far" pics for you:

GREAT work everyone!!

We also just got a new shipment of everyone's favorite gecko...the crested! We have some WAYYYY cool ones too, come check them out!!

There are the Red Harlequins (sweet) that range from $149.99 to $249.99

Even some Gargoyle Geckos (super cool) for $89.99

"Checkin' out my reflection..."

"Where's Waldo?"

Plus there is also a beautiful assortment of normal Cresteds with awesome coloring.

Perhaps the most excitement, however, is about a very special Asian Water Monitor named Frank. He has been a workaholic lately...Jay has been taking him to and from L.A. every week to film a new Disney Channel TV series!!!

"Jessie" will premier tonight on the Disney Channel at 9pm...so be sure to check it out to see Frank as the lovable little trouble-maker, Mr. Kipling. We are SO excited!

With all this craziness going on, we are still the same old awesome place to come have a party, feed turtles & tortoises, touch and hold snakes, and just check out some very RARE reptiles...so be sure to stop by!

See you soon!
