He Who MUST Be Named

Hello herp fans....many of you know that Prehistoric Pets recently acquired a 5-foot male American Alligator.  You probably also know that we just finished his enclosure and had a party to celebrate!  Well, after all that time and excitement, he still remains NAMELESS!

This poor little guy needs your help...how can such a beautiful creature go without a name???

We are holding a contest that began at our Spooky Masquerade this past October, where you as our guests (and web fans) can enter a name suggestion and possibly win an awesome prize, a 1-year pass to The Reptile Zoo!

Here at Prehistoric, we will narrow the names down at the end of December, choose around 10 or 15 of the best ones, post them on our Facebook pages and let our fans VOTE!  So, once we get them up, if yours is chosen it is your job to get your family, friends, coworkers, poker partners, Avon ladies, cats, and anyone else to vote for yours!!!

So far, we have over 100 names in, and it grows every single day!  Some of the awesome ones that I have seen so far include Darth Gator, Black Beard, Gladiator, and Pickle.  So, remember, he is a BOY, and very very handsome.  Online, you can send in your name ideas to:

BLOG@prehistoricinc.com

Please include your name, plus your name for the gator, as well as your hometown and phone number.

Thanks, and buena suerte!

Operation Christmas Child

Calling all Herpers! (and even the non-herpers)    We need your help!

This year, The Reptile Zoo is working with Operation Christmas Child.  OCC is a program created by Samaritan's Purse International Relief.  Following the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37), SPIR gives aid to the world's poor, sick, and suffering.  Since 1970, they have provided critical relief to the victims of natural disaster, war, disease, and famine all over the planet.  Their endeavors include Haiti, Kenya, Sudan, Cambodia, and the Amazon Basin...and thats just recently.

Operation Christmas Child was started in 1990 as a way to not only reach those less fortunate, but to aid the effort that no child should be forgotten on Christmas.  Samaritan's Purse adds a "Greatest Gift of All" booklet with many of the shoeboxes, so that kids can learn about Jesus, God's greatest gift.  Parents see these showboxes as well, and in turn, also learn of Jesus' love for them.

Last Christmas (2010) approximately 1.12 MILLION children from 14 countries across the world recieved special shoebox gifts.  That's incredible!  Hundreds of volunteers braved the rubble of Haiti, the rural villages of Romania, and even ARCTIC conditions to ensure that children living in difficult circumstances would experience the joy of receiving a gift at Christmas.  Just amazing.  I have personally been reading some of the stories and blogs on their website, looking at pictures, and seeing the facts....you guys HAVE to check it out and learn more, its fantastic!  What an awesome and altruistic organization.  Just look at these smiles:

So, here at The Reptile Zoo, we are acting as a drop-off site for you.  Not only that, we will donate $1 to SPIR for EVERY box received.

Now, how do you make a box??  You will need a shoebox, or a closed container of the same size.  You can wrap the box, but please wrap the lid separately.  Next, distinguish if your gift is for a boy, or a girl, and what age group (2-4, 5-9, 10-14).  There are convenient labels that you can print out and tape to the top of the box at the "Pack a Shoebox" website at the bottom.

Fill the box with a variety of gifts (examples on the same website...they include toys, school supplies, and hygiene items).  Please also include a $7 donation to cover shipping costs (check made out to Samaritan's Purse, with "OCC" in the memo line, in an envelope inside the box).  You can make one combined donation if you are donating more than one box.  Finally, please place a rubber band around each box and take them to the drop off site.  (Prehistoric Pets)

If you are not local, there are drop-off locations near you, just check out the site:

http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Drop_Off_Locations/

Note:  Please DO NOT include used or damaged items, war-related items such as toy weapons or soldiers, chocolate or food, out-of-date candy, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items (glass), or aerosol cans

The Reptile Zoo will take all of your donations (plus our donation of $1 per box) to the collection site around the end of November.  Official collection dates are Nov 14-21 but we can take boxes after that as well.  OCC takes donations year-round.

So come one everyone, let's make this Christmas memorable for the children of the world!

I have included the website for Samaritan's Purse, as well as the OCC link for shoebox making, plus a link for a shoebox-making video...also, make sure to look around the SPIR website, its amazing!!

So, you have the tools, now let's start creating some smiles!  Thanks everyone!!!

JFW...its what we do

Many people forget about one of the cutest little critters that we bring to our parties.  They are a big hit in the handling area of our Zoo...several young guests have even named them.

So, for this Jurassic Fact of the Week, what small lizard is covered in spots???

LEOPARD GECKOS!   YAYYYYYY!

I love them...don't you??  They are so sweet and gentle, and aren't their tails just awesome?  Leopard Geckos have a naturally FAT tail...it not only stores fat, but serves as a huge defense.  When a predator is near, that tail looks mighty tasty, so they usually bite there first.  The Leopard Gecko will POP it off, and run away to safety!  But thats not all.....they then grow a NEW one!  How cool is that?  I want to grow a tail......

Leopard Geckos always get an "Awwwwwwww" when they come out to be handled.  They are adorable, very tame, and usually have awesome colors.  They make wonderful pets too!  These guys are from the desert areas of Pakistan, so they DO need more heat than most geckos, but other than that, its VERY easy.  They eat crickets and worms with plenty of calcium on top, and their little tiny claws are so small that there is no worry of boo-boos!  We have plenty at our shop right now, so come check them out....Christmas is right around the corner!!!

Now isn't that a face you want to take home to Mom???

Zoo News

October may be over, but the excitement is just beginning!

Our newely finished alligator exhibit is up and running, with our 5-foot gator as well as an Alligator Snapping Turtle enjoying the abundant water.  We are still working on getting an even larger gator (fingers crossed) to inhabit the super cool enclosure, but until then, take part in our contest to name the one we have!  Come in to the zoo anytime and find the "naming table" by the photobooth/animal handling area.  There are bright green slips of paper, enter your alligator name idea, YOUR name, address, and email for a chance to win a 1-year pass to the Zoo!  Drop them in the blue bucket and at the end of December we will sort through them all, put the best ones on our Facebook page and let our fans decide!!  (So check back for that portion of the contest and get your friends to vote!)

Make sure to not only check out the gator and snapping turtles...but also the Softshell Turtles, Red-eared Sliders, and the Pacu (a South American freshwater fish related to the Piranha).  They used to be in the pond up front, but in this exhibit you really see how HUGE they are!

The Caiman Lizard enclosure turned out so awesome!  If you haven't seen the finished product come check it out!  They are so happy swimming around with the turtles and fish.  This particular enclosure again provides a GREAT view of one of the sneakier fish in the front pond...the Red-tail Catfish! (come and see if you can find him!)

Our new wing next door is being worked on everyday...I hear talk of a new presentation area, new zoo exhibits, and even a new incubation room with a window for guests!  How cool does that sound?!?!?!  I can't wait to see what happens....

Our Water Monitor Breeding Group is honeymooning in the gator exhibit for right now, and it seems to be working its magic...we will most likely have a few clutches on the way VERY soon!!

ALSO, this is a big month for us because of Black Friday!!  Yayyyyyy!  There are going to be some SWEET deals happening, and I will keep you informed...possibly another party as well??  We'll see.....

As for the Zoo itself, we are still the same AWESOME place to come hang out, look around, bring the kids, and PARTY!  Plus, we are getting new additions to the zoo or retail area almost every week, so there is always something new to see!

See you soon herpers!!

There is a HUGE Masquerade Benefit Auction happening RIGHT NOW, on our Reptile Zoo Facebook Page. There are tons of donations from ExoTerra, ZooMed, Repashy, Prehistoric Pets, frequent customers, as well as our own Sam, Katy, Linda, and Mike.

This is our FIRST ANNUAL online auction to support Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary and The Reptile Zoo. Check Facebook each day this week for new auctions leading up to our special event at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, CA on October 30th!

The auction has begun, and will end at 9:00 PM PDT on October 30.

All posts should include only your bid in US dollars at least $5 above the previous bid. All negative, defamatory, & off topic comments will be immediately removed and blocked at the sole discretion of Prehistoric Inc. All bidders must be at least 18 years old. All bids are final and cannot be removed, edited, or replaced.

Bid does not include the shipping cost of $55. Animals can be shipped within the United States and to the next Hamm Germany show. If you are not within the US or able to pick-up the animal at Hamm email info@prehistoricinc.com for pricing and availability before bidding.

Please be aware of all local, state & federal requirements regarding ownership of the animal you are bidding on. Prehistoric Inc. is not liable or responsible for failure to meet these regulations.

Any bids after the action close will not be accepted unless an endurance challenge is activated.* The winner will be determined by the highest bid placed before the auction close. If more than 1 bid at the winning price was placed at the close of the auction the first bid wins.

*If 5 minutes before the auction close there is more than 1 bid per minute the auction will become an endurance challenge. The auction will no longer end at the noted time, but when no new bids are placed for 5 minutes. Bidders can only win an endurance challenge by outlasting the competition in a bidding war.

At the end of the auction a payment link will be added to www.prehistoricpets.com to complete the transaction. Users who fail to provide payment within 24 hours of the auction close will forfeit the offer and be blocked from future auctions.

All products/animals are sold as shown and cannot be transferred, traded, or returned.

Fiesty Little Buggers

Our newest addition to the vast array of exotic critters for sale is the Halloween Moon Crab!

These guys are known by other names, such as the Red Land Crab and the Whitespot Crab, but their Halloween alias is PERFECT for this time of year!!

They are found in mangroves, sand dunes, and rainforests along the Pacific Coast from Mexico down to Peru, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.  The body can reach a width of 5 centimeters, and they are super colorful...

These crabs commonly have an almost entirely black-purple carapace (body), a large pair of purplish claws, reddish-orange legs, orange-maroon spots behind the eyes, as well as whitish spots on their central-lower carapace.

Plus, they are pretty feisty for their size.  They won't hesitate to pinch, as most crabs do...but if you are looking for a fantastic addition to your aquarium, or just an interesting new pet...these guys are the way to go.  They are SO cool looking!!

Come check them out!    (2 in stock / $29.99)

Hot Turtle Eggs

It never ceases to amaze me how easily, quickly, and adequately animals can adapt to new surroundings.  I loved my ecology, vertebrate zoology, and ornithology classes in college.....SO interesting to learn about different species overcoming threats and environmental changes.  Animals are truly awesome.

ScienceDaily reports that researchers found turtles that actually evolved in their egg-laying to accommodate higher beach temperatures.

I thought that was what digging a deep hole was for....

Well, burying the eggs is mainly to keep them WARM, not to even out the temp....and also to protect them from predators.  A study was done on Ascension Island, off the coast of South America, for the Green Turtle.  Mothers would travel from the coast of S.A. to this tiny island to lay their eggs, mainly because it was where they themselves hatched (something I didn't know!).  There were two beaches in the study, and though they were only 6 kilometers apart, the temperatures varied around 3 degrees.

It doesn't seem like much, but after the eggs were put into warm incubators, it was found that the eggs from the warmer beach thrived much more than those from the cooler beach.  COOOOOOL.

These turtle mommas know what they are doing!

Check back for more news from the Reptile WORLD!
