Hog Wild

Love is in the air here at Prehistoric Pets....for the animals anyway.     :-P

Today we discovered our Hognose Snake couple getting very cozy in their home.  Hmmmmmm...

Can't you just feel the love??  Hopefully there will be some little ones on the way VERY soon!!!

How exciting......so WHAT is a Hognose Snake you may ask??

Well, they are a colubrid snake, native to the U.S. and northern Mexico, with a characteristic upturned snout.  This snout serves its purpose as a very handy tool in digging and burrowing through sandy soil.  They are HIGHLY variable in color and pattern, sometimes blotched, sometimes solid...and range in color from red, green, orange, brown, and black.  So how do you tell???  The nose doesn't lie my friends...

When threatened, they actually raise off the ground and hiss, mimicking a cobra.  Sounds like a cool little dude.  The largest species of Hognose Snake can reach almost 6 feet...but most stay relatively small (around 2 feet).  They are rear-fanged, but not techinically venomous.  The saliva is toxic to prey but not dangerous to humans, and they NEVER bite.  How can they be sure?  Experiments have proved that you must smell like their prey to even get a feigned strike.  Nice.

So, maybe soon we will have some tiny hognoses running around...but until then come check out the loving couple here at The Reptile Zoo.  See you soon herpers!

Herper Question of the Week

Many of you ask:  "Why do you cut snake eggs open, instead of letting them hatch on their own?"

Here at Prehistoric, we cut our eggs after the first one in the clutch starts to pip.  This means that the snake is far enough along to start to break out of the egg, and has already made a tiny hole.  It is safe for the snakes because they are, themselves, trying to hatch at that time.

The reason we cut them, instead of letting them hatch themselves is because occasionally a snake will not be able to break its shell, and will drown in the fluids.  Opening them ourselves ensures the highest number of surviving hatchlings.  The fact that it shows us what morphs we have is just a bonus.   :-)

Please continue to ask questions, we are always here to get you the best information possible.  Call, email, stop by, or post on our Facebook pages and we will do our best to answer promptly.  Thanks everyone!

Westward Expansion!

Howdy!   We are movin out WEST ya'll!!

No, not into the ocean....or to China....but west of our building.  We just bought the space next door!

Many of you got the special experience of enjoying a FREE presentation in this very room during our Spooky Masquerade last month.  It was packed full and some very exotic creatures were shown...some that don't even go out to regular parties like alligators, gila monsters, & rattlesnakes!

So we are steadily making changes to that wing, and hopefully when we finish there will be a new area of the zoo!  Also, we are hoping to have a brand-new breeding area.  Its still up-in-the-air, but we are thinking a window too, for public view of clutches being pulled!!

What do YOU think we should add???  (tell us on Facebook!)

If you have been in and checked everything out, you are probably familiar with the three large cages in the pet shop area.  There are usually different things in them from time to time, but right now we have a Rhino Iguana, and a few retics.  They will soon find new homes and we will tear those cages out (maybe by Christmas!) to make room for even more retail!  Just another way we are moving towards being your go-to shop for everything reptile!!

See?  we hardly have enough room up front for our GROWING retail supply!  But don't worry, these animals will get NEW cages, maybe in our new wing!!  So excited....aren't you?

Keep checking back for more info...there's always something new happening here at Prehistoric Pets!

This is our FIRST ANNUAL online auction to support Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary and The Reptile Zoo. Check Facebook each day this week for new auctions leading up to our special event at The Reptile Zoo in Fountain Valley, CA on October 30th!

The auction has begun, and will end at 9:00 PM PDT on October 30.

All posts should include only your bid in US dollars at least $5 above the previous bid. All negative, defamatory, & off topic comments will be immediately removed and blocked at the sole discretion of Prehistoric Inc. All bidders must be at least 18 years old. All bids are final and cannot be removed, edited, or replaced.

Bid does not include the shipping cost of $55. Animals can be shipped within the United States and to the next Hamm Germany show. If you are not within the US or able to pick-up the animal at Hamm email info@prehistoricinc.com for pricing and availability before bidding.

Please be aware of all local, state & federal requirements regarding ownership of the animal you are bidding on. Prehistoric Inc. is not liable or responsible for failure to meet these regulations.

Any bids after the action close will not be accepted unless an endurance challenge is activated.* The winner will be determined by the highest bid placed before the auction close. If more than 1 bid at the winning price was placed at the close of the auction the first bid wins.

*If 5 minutes before the auction close there is more than 1 bid per minute the auction will become an endurance challenge. The auction will no longer end at the noted time, but when no new bids are placed for 5 minutes. Bidders can only win an endurance challenge by outlasting the competition in a bidding war.

At the end of the auction a payment link will be added to www.prehistoricpets.com to complete the transaction. Users who fail to provide payment within 24 hours of the auction close will forfeit the offer and be blocked from future auctions.

All products/animals are sold as shown and cannot be transferred, traded, or returned.

October Treat!

So October is all about the scary, spooky, and creepy, right?  Well, we may be a tiny bit late, but for the rest of the month we have a creepy crawly addition to the hands-on area...a tarantula and scorpion!

Our Rose-hair Tarantulas are very docile, and beautiful to look at.  They get their name from the light pink hairs on their "head", or cephalothorax.  Originating in Chile, they are also known as the Chilean Rose.  They are always a big hit at parties, so why not bring them out for some special spooky handling??

The Emperor Scorpion is the largest type of scorpion in the world...however, they have the least amount of venom.  Ours DO still have their stingers, but their pincers are their main defense.  You can tell the level of danger by the size of both:  big stinger, small pincers = VERY venomous...and vice versa.  The Emperor has huge pincers, which they actually use more for sense than defense.  Their pincers are covered in tiny little hairs that they use almost like a cat's whiskers...to "feel" around their environment.  They are from Africa, love to eat crickets and super worms, and can glow TURQUOISE under a black light!!

So come by before the month is over for a very creepy type of petting zoo!!

Reptile Zoo PARTYYYYY!

Who doesn't LOVE October???

This year we are having a Family Friendly, Spooky Shindig here at the Zoo on Sunday, October 30th.  Why not on Halloween you may ask?  Well, you will all be busy trick-or-treating after school I'm sure...plus, Sunday is when most people are able to be out and about doing fun things, and we want EVERYONE to come!  Yayyyyyyy!

There are SO many things packed into this night you       won't        even       believe it!!  Here is the itinerary:

Ok, so the spooky, silly excitement will start at 5pm and last until 10pm, and admission is the same ($5 for everyone over 3 years old).  But remember your COSTUMES because when you first come in we will snap a picture of you, post it to our facebook pages, and let our fans vote for the best one!

1st place:   LIFETIME membership to the zoo

2nd place:   1 YEAR membership to the zoo

3rd place:   6 MONTH membership to the zoo

***Guidleines:  Please make sure the costume is "rated PG"...let's keep it family friendly***

Our alligator enclosure will be finished!!  We will have everything done by the end of this month, and will be adding water to test for leaks.  PLUS, you will have the opportunity to name our "new gator of unknown size and origin" (haha...we don't have it yet).  Pick a good name, drop it in the bowl (or hat...or bucket...or box...we don't know yet) and the winner will receive not only their name on the Gator's cage tag, but ALSO a 1-year membership to the zoo!

We will ALSO working on getting some sort of food truck to come out for the evening...possibly Dogzilla, Kogi, Burnt Truck or Lime Truck.

We will have games going on in the party rooms...most likely a coloring contest, scavenger hunt, an 18 and older WORM -eating contest, and bobbing for....something.  Speaking of games...there will also be a raffle for a chance to win:

A new pet plus a complete starter kit!

A video camera!

A LIFETIME membership to the zoo!

....and more

Furthermore...we will be having a live hatching snake eggs via YouTube for our fans who can't be here!

Our fearless leaders are trying to get Joel from Forever Wild to come back with some crazy critters of his own...and of course we will have our own "shop celebrities", such as Twinkie (world's largest snake) and Frank, the asian water monitor and Disney Channel star.

In addition...for the month of October, our hands-on area will include a tarantula and a scorpion!  Ahhhhhhh!

.....and OF COURSE....There will be lots and lots of CANDY!!!

Whew!!  thats's a LOT of awesomeness happening in one evening!  We hope you all can come out and join us...wear your best costume, bring your bravery, test your skills, and get ready for some crazy reptililian FUN!!!!!!

See you there!
